The 2022 model year is bringing two exciting additions to the premium SUV market. The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are two SUVs that each feature three rows of seating, and space for up to eight passengers. They are part of the same revival of the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer SUVs that were discontinued back in 1991 after dominating the segment for decades. For 2022, the new Wagoneer vehicles are preserving the same essence as their predecessors, but reinventing the Wagoneer nameplate in a totally different way, with a collection that offers the utmost luxury and refinement. Not only that, but both the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer offer legendary 4X4 capability, class-leading towing capacities, and tons of new technology for the whole family to enjoy. To learn more about what makes each of these models unique, keep reading!
Exterior Features in the Wagoneer Collection
The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer have one major difference right off the bat, which is that the Wagoneer offers two trim levels, and the Grand Wagoneer offers four. This allows for some more variation in the Grand Wagoneer lineup, but rest assured that both models have a wealth of exciting features at every trim level. The Wagoneer features the Series II and Series III trims, with standard 20-inch wheels, a roof rack, a hands-free power liftgate, and Deep Tint sunscreen glass. The Grand Wagoneer builds upon this foundation by featuring standard 22-inch wheels on its upper trim levels, as well as adding more features like premium color-tinted glass, standard power-deployable running boards, and a “Wagoneer” emblem that stretches across the front end. The Grand Wagoneer’s trim levels include the Series I, Series II, Series III, and Obsidian, the latter of which adds black accents throughout the vehicle's exterior, on the grille, roof rack, and badging.
Wagoneer vs Grand Wagoneer Interior Features
Moving inside, both the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer feature a three-row cabin with seating for up to eight passengers. They also both have the option to seat seven passengers, with two bucket seats in the second row instead of a three-seat bench. Both have a rear cargo area measuring 27 cubic feet, and allow you to extend that area when you fold down the rear seats. The Wagoneer has a total cargo volume of 116.7 cubic feet, compared to 94.2 cubic feet on the Grand Wagoneer. On both models, the interior is clad in standard Nappa leather upholstery. For the Grand Wagoneer, the upper trim levels beyond the Series I feature premium Palermo leather, with an available quilted detail. It also features real walnut wood accents, and an available suede headliner that comes in black suede on the Obsidian. All models on the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer also offer ambient LED interior lighting, but the Grand Wagoneer maximizes the air of luxury with additional features like massaging front seats, and a front console cooler bin.
Powertrain & Capability
One area where these two SUVs differ is in what you’ll find under each of their hoods. The powertrain for the Grand Wagoneer features a robust 6.4-liter V8 engine, rated at 471 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. This engine pairs with an 8-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission, with standard 4-wheel drive courtesy of the legendary Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II 4X4 systems. The Wagoneer, on the other hand, features a 5.7-liter V8 with an output of 392 horsepower and 404 lb-ft of torque. The Wagoneer features the same TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic, but it also has the added benefit of an eTorque mild hybrid system with a 48-volt battery pack. The Wagoneer also features standard rear-wheel drive, though it also has the same 4-wheel drive systems as the Grand Wagoneer as an available option. In terms of capability, properly-equipped Grand Wagoneers have a maximum towing capacity of up to 9,860 pounds, while the Wagoneer’s maximum capacity is 10,000. Both models can also ford up to 24 inches of water with the help of the Quadra-Lift Air Suspension System, and there’s even an available Advanced All-Terrain Group that adds the Selec-Terrain Traction Management System with hill-descent control.
Tech Features in the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer
The last aspect we want to compare between the Wagoneer and the Grand Wagoneer is all the amazing technology you can find on each of these SUVs. They both feature the new Uconnect 5 infotainment system, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, and multiple user profiles to customize your unique preferences. For the Wagoneer, this system comes with a 10.1-inch touchscreen, which increases to 12 inches on the Grand Wagoneer. The Wagoneer collection also introduces a second touchscreen for the front passenger, which is available on all models but comes standard on the top two trim levels of the Grand Wagoneer. The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer welcome an industry-first partnership with McIntosh luxury audio providers, which offers stunning professional-quality audio systems to the whole lineup. The Wagoneer has a 19-speaker setup available on its Series III trim, while the Grand Wagoneer’s upper trim levels feature a standard 23-speaker MX1375 Reference Entertainment System with a 24-channel amplifier.
