Service your Tires at Kufleitner CDJR!

Any vehicle owner knows that routine maintenance is a vital part of owning a vehicle. To keep your Jeep running smoothly, there are many services to be performed. However, one item that is sometimes overlooked is the tires. While they may not be a mechanical component required for the vehicle to run, your Jeep’s tires are an essential part of your safety on the road, and they should be taken care of just the same. Here at Kufleitner Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, we want to help you keep your Jeep rolling for many miles to come. That’s why we’d like to offer you some tips and services that we provide to keep your tires in good health and keep you and your passengers safe. Continue reading below to learn more!

Monitor tread depth

The tread of your tires is essential to your on-road safety as it helps maintain traction in inclement road conditions. Making sure that your tires have enough tread left on them is a quick and easy way to keep you safe on your travels. Inspecting your tire’s tread depth is easy, even without a tread depth gauge. Using a penny, place it in a few of the grooves across the tire’s road surface. If the top of Lincoln’s head is covered, your tires are looking good. If you can see the top half of Lincoln’s head, it’s time to start thinking about some new tires.

Rotate your tires

While there are a handful of services that help extend the life of your tires, getting regular tire rotations is the most surefire and trusted way to do so. By nature, tires wear unevenly due to the location of your Jeep’s heaviest parts; the engine and transmission. The weight of these components falls on the front axle, putting more pressure on the front tires, causing them to wear faster than the rears. By regularly rotating the tires front to back, you can slow down this uneven wear and, in turn, get a longer life out of your tires. For best results, we recommend rotating your tires roughly every 5,000 miles. An easy way to remember a tire rotation is to get one done with each oil change.

Monitor tire pressure

A tire service we recommend is checking the tire pressure. Modern Jeep’s have tire pressure monitoring to alert drivers if their tire pressure dips below the recommended PSI. However, checking your tire pressure at least once a month is still encouraged. Overinflated tires can cause the tires to expand and, in extreme cases, crack. On the opposite side, underinflated tires will make a larger surface area that touches the ground, causing premature tread wear. Additionally, checking your air pressure during the cold months is essential, as cold temperatures can condense the air pressure. To determine the correct PSI for your tires, you can find it on the placard on the driver’s door jamb or inside the owner’s manual.

Get a wheel alignment

The last recommendation for tire services is alignments. Alignments are essential after getting suspension work done or new tires installed. However, your Jeep’s alignment can be thrown off by hitting a pothole. Three specifications are checked and adjusted during an alignment. The first is toe, which is the horizontal angle of your wheels. Toe-in or toe-out will cause a dragging effect when driving down the road, causing uneven tread wear and decreasing gas mileage. Next is the camber, which is the vertical angle. Positive camber causes the bottom of the wheel to pucker out, causing uneven tread wear to the inside edge of the tires, while negative camber leans the bottom of the wheel in and wears the outside edge. The third and final specification is castor, the steering axis’s angle. For each model, Jeep has a specific degree that the steering axis should be.
