The Wrangler 4xe is the Industry's First Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle with a Front and Rear Locking Differential. Its system is paired with a 2.0L I4 DOHC direct-injection Turbo PHEV engine. A 17-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, regenerative brake booster and eight-speed automatic transmission work together to send impressive amounts of power and torque to each wheel, maximizing the capability of every component.

The Jeep Brand is teaming with Electrify America and establishing a Jeep 4xe Charging Network that's available at no extra cost for owners of the most Eco-Friendly Wrangler ever. These charging stations powered either directly by the electrical grid or by solar panel units are being installed around the country over the next year near Badge of Honor off-road trailheads, including the iconic Moab, Rubicon Trail, and Big Bear vehicle trails.

REGENERATIVE BRAKING

This feature allows the battery to be charged when decelerating and braking. The Max Regeneration feature remaps the accelerator pedal to command more aggressive regen at low pedal positions. It allows you to slow the vehicle down without the brake pedal, but a complete stop always requires the brake pedal. It also stays selected until you turn it off.

HYBRID TECHNOLOGY

ELECTRIC MODE

When the battery has more than a 1% charge, it can run in Electric Mode. This allows for nearly zero tailpipe emissions up to highway speeds. The vehicle can run in this mode for up to 21 miles.

ESAVE MODE

eSave Mode prioritizes the 2.0L engine. This saves the battery charge for later use. When power demand is low, the engine shuts off. It can also be reconfigured to increase the battery charge as well.

How is the 2021 Wrangler 4xe powered?

Some may argue that hybrids are notorious for decreasing engine power, but with the Wrangler 4xe, this certainly is not the case, and it's got the numbers to prove it! The Wrangler 4xe comes with a 2.0L I4 engine paired with to two electric generators powered by a 400-volt battery pack under the rear seat. One generator is mounted on top of the engine, on the cylinder head, while the other is placed in front of the TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission. This setup gives the Wrangler 4xe a whopping 375 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque. Furthermore, this setup provides drivers with a total driving range of 370 miles, 49 miles per gallon, and 21-miles of fully electric driving. The 4xe comes with E-Selec buttons that allow drivers to control the hybrid system. The system defaults to Hybrid mode using both gas and electric power. E-Save mode disengages the electric generators to recharge the battery pack and save electric power for a later time. Electric mode disables the gas engine, providing drivers with 21 miles of nearly silent, zero-emissions driving.

Can I still take the Wrangler 4xe off-roading?

Of course! Just because the Wrangler 4xe employs a hybrid platform doesn't take away from the iconic Wrangler spirit. In fact, upon a closer look, you may notice it's actually more capable. The main reason the Wrangler 4xe is more capable is that the electric generator in front of the transmission allows for instantaneous access to the 470 lb-ft of torque. This allows you to move the wheels without needing to build up engine revolutions when you're crawling over tough terrain. This instant torque is also helpful while trying to merge on the highway. What's better is that the Wrangler 4xe has a 0-60 time of just six seconds! The Wrangler 4xe still comes with the same all-terrain equipment as the rest of the Wranglers, including Dana 44 solid axles, tow hooks, underbody skid plates, a high-strength steel frame, and more. In addition, a full-time 4x4 system with a two-speed transfer case is employed by the Wrangler 4xe. So what about if you're off-roading and come to a stream? Don't worry! All the electrical connections are sealed, the electric generators are well insulated, and the hybrid battery pack is under the rear seat protected from everything below the vehicle.

What are the Wrangler 4xe trim levels and features?

As we previously mentioned, the Wrangler 4xe is home to features similar to the higher-level trims of the gas-powered Wrangler. The entry-level Sahara features body-color fender flares, 20-inch alloy wheels, keyless entry/ignition, an 8.4-inch Uconnect 4 touchscreen, Hybrid Pages to monitor usage, Apple and Android smartphone integration, a 9-speaker Alpine premium sound system, dual-zone automatic climate control, and leather-trimmed upholstery.
